Civil law, as opposed to criminal law, is the branch of law dealing with disputes between individuals and/or organizations in which compensation may be awarded to the victim. Although the majority of lawsuits are settled without even getting to trial, they can expand into a very complicated process. The defendant must then respond and deliver a written “answer” to the complaint in order to make any kind of plea. After the answer is filed, the parties engage in the “discovery” process.
